TL;DR

Shirodhara is a steady stream of warm medicated liquid poured across the forehead for 30 to 45 minutes. Small clinical studies link it to lower anxiety and calmer stress markers, and in our clinic it works best for stress-driven anxiety with poor sleep, used alongside proper medical care rather than in place of it.

  • A session usually runs 30 to 45 minutes, with the oil kept warm and the stream swinging slowly across the forehead.
  • A randomized study from Japan’s University of Toyama found lower state anxiety after 30 minutes of Shirodhara than after lying still for the same time.
  • Most patients start with a course of 7 to 14 sessions. Sleep often improves before daytime worry does.
  • Your physician picks the liquid after assessing you. There is no single “anxiety oil.”
  • Fever, a blocked nose, a recent head injury or panic that feels out of control usually means we wait, or refer you on.
Stage Roughly how long What you’ll notice
Physician consultation 15 to 20 min (first visit) Questions on sleep, digestion, medication and history
Head and shoulder oiling 5 to 10 min Warm oil on the scalp. Not prescribed for everyone
Shirodhara stream 30 to 45 min Steady warm flow across the forehead, eyes covered
Rest on the table 10 to 15 min Heavy, sleepy calm. Don’t rush to sit up
Wipe down and advice 5 to 10 min Face cleaned, scalp oil left in, aftercare explained

Timings vary with your prescription. Plan on about 90 minutes at the clinic for a first visit.

Course Typical use Notes
Single session A first try, or one very stressful week Calm that lasts a day or two. Good for finding out if you like it
7 sessions Most common start for stress-related anxiety and poor sleep Consecutive or near-daily, paired with routine changes at home
14 sessions Anxiety or poor sleep that has gone on for months Physician reviews progress at the halfway mark
21 sessions or within Panchakarma Selected cases only Usually after internal preparation. Decided case by case
⚠ When anxiety needs more than Shirodhara

If panic attacks feel unmanageable, if you’re having thoughts of harming yourself, or if anxiety is keeping you from work or from leaving the house, please see a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist first. Shirodhara can support that care later. It can’t replace it.

Don’t stop or cut down prescribed anxiety or sleep medication on your own. India’s free government mental health helpline, Tele-MANAS, is available on 14416.
