About Abhyangam

A full-body oil massage, planned by a physician

Therapists apply warm medicated oil over the whole body with gentle, rhythmic strokes.

The oil

The physician chooses the oil for you. It is not a fixed list, and it is not a spa blend. Warm oil is part of the method.

The strokes

Long strokes follow the arms and legs. Small circles work over the joints. The oil goes on slowly, with pressure that stays gentle to medium.

The steam

A steam bath, called swedanam, usually follows, then a few minutes of rest. Some sessions also include work on Marma points, the sensitive points Ayurveda describes along the body.

Not a spa massage with scented oil.

The physician looks at you first, then decides the oil, the pressure and whether to go ahead.

Classical texts place oil massage in the daily routine (dinacharya). Research on Abhyangam itself is limited, so we describe what the tradition says and do not promise outcomes.

Benefits

Benefits of Ayurvedic Massage in Hyderabad

Eight things Ayurveda uses oil massage for. Read what the tradition says, then ask the physician what suits you.

Worth knowing: Oil massage supports the body. It does not treat a disease. Tell the physician about swelling, varicose veins, clotting problems, eczema, psoriasis or any new or post-injury pain before you book. For knee or back pain, Janu Vasti and Kati Vasti are more targeted. Read about joint pain treatment.

A session

What Happens in an Ayurvedic Massage Session in Hyderabad

Four steps, in this order. Timings depend on the plan your physician sets.

  1. Step 1 of 4

A short check with the physician

The physician asks about your health, medicines, skin and any pain. This is when we decide whether Abhyangam suits you today.

    • Tell us about fever, rashes, pregnancy or recent surgery
    • Eat lightly, two to three hours before
    • Wear clothes you do not mind oiling
  2. Step 2 of 4

The oil is chosen for you

The physician decides the oil. It is warmed before it touches your skin.

    • Medicated oil, not a scented spa blend
    • The choice depends on you, not on a fixed list
  3. Step 3 of 4

    Abhyangam massage, head to foot

Therapists use long strokes along the limbs and small circles over the joints. Work on Marma points may be included.

    • Gentle to medium pressure
    • Tell the therapist if you want it lighter
  4. Step 4 of 4

    Herbal steam, then rest

Swedanam, the herbal steam bath, follows with your head kept out of it. Then a few minutes of rest and a warm-water wash.

    • Avoid cold drinks, cold showers and strong AC for the rest of the day
    • Drink warm water
    • Tell your physician if you feel dizzy or itchy afterwards

Plan a little extra time. The quick consultation comes first, and a few minutes of rest come at the end.

Questions

Ayurvedic Massage in Hyderabad: FAQs

Pick a question. Not sure it suits you? Ask a physician on WhatsApp before you book.

Question 01 of 10

What is Abhyangam massage?

Abhyangam is a Kerala-style full-body massage. Therapists apply warm medicated oil with slow, rhythmic strokes, and herbal steam, called swedanam, usually follows. In Ayurvedic terms it is used for dryness, stiffness and tiredness. A physician chooses the oil and decides whether it suits you.

Question 02 of 10

How long does an Ayurvedic massage take?

It depends on the plan your physician sets, so we confirm the time when you book. Allow extra for the short consultation at the start and a few minutes of rest and a warm-water wash at the end.

Question 03 of 10

Is Ayurvedic massage safe for everyone?

Not for everyone, and not on every day. Tell the physician first if you have a fever, cold or infection, if you are pregnant or may be, or if you have a recent surgery or injury, a rash or open wound, swelling, varicose veins or a clotting problem. Some of these mean a wait. Some mean a changed plan. The physician decides.

Question 04 of 10

Can I have it while taking regular medicines?

Keep taking them. Ayurvedic massage does not replace treatment from your doctor, so do not stop or change a medicine because you are having a massage. Tell the physician what you take, including medicines for blood pressure, diabetes or the heart.

Question 05 of 10

How is it different from a spa massage?

Three things differ: the oil, the steam and who decides. Abhyangam uses medicated oil chosen by a physician, at gentle to medium pressure, and herbal steam usually follows. A typical spa oil massage uses plain or scented oil at light to firm pressure, and you and the therapist set the plan. Spa menus differ from place to place.

Question 06 of 10

Can Ayurvedic massage treat back or knee pain?

Abhyangam supports the body. It does not treat a disease. For back or knee pain the physician may suggest Kati Vasti or Janu Vasti, which work on one area. Tell the physician about any new pain, or pain after an injury, before you book.

Question 07 of 10

How many sessions do I need?

There is no fixed number. Some people book one session to relax or to try it first. Some book a series over a few weeks. It is also the usual preparation before Panchakarma. Your physician sets the schedule after seeing you.

Question 08 of 10

What should I do before and after the massage?

Before: eat lightly two to three hours earlier and wear clothes you do not mind oiling. After: rest, drink warm water, and avoid cold drinks, cold showers and strong AC for the rest of the day. If you feel dizzy or itchy afterwards, tell your physician.

Question 09 of 10

How much does an Ayurvedic massage cost in Hyderabad?

The price depends on the plan your physician sets and on whether you book one session or a series. Packages can differ by clinic. Message us on WhatsApp and we will share the current details for your clinic before you book.

Question 10 of 10

Where can I get an Ayurvedic massage in Hyderabad?

At any of Arooda’s three clinics: Kondapur near Gachibowli, Srinagar Colony in Banjara Hills, and Alkapur Township in Manikonda. The clinics section above has addresses and Google Maps links. Pick the one closest to you.
